My mama’s love and encouragement was the spark that gave me the confidence to overcome my own doubt.
16. D。文中提到“Hold your head up high,”has been heard many times in my home.
17. A。 The gift my mama gave me lives on in another generation.
W: Listening comprehension
Topic eight: Plans & resolutions
W: Almost time to go back to school. Do you have any plans for this school year?
M: Yeah. I need to work harder on my physics and my English isn’t good enough. What about you?
W: My physics also needs improving. And I’m thinking of getting more exercise.
M: Happy birthday! And now blow out the candles.
W: (Puffing…)
M: Can you share your birthday wishes with us?
W: Sorry, but no. I’d rather keep it to myself.
M: Hi, Lucy. Good to see you again.
W: You, too. How did you spend your New Year holiday?
M: You know, the usual things, eating, visiting friends and relatives, watching TV… What about you?
W: Well, I did the same things. But on top of that, I also made a New Year resolution.
M: Tell me what it is.
W: I’ve decided to go to sleep before 12 o’clock and get up before 8 o’clock this year. You know there is a saying “Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.”
M: That’s a healthy lifestyle. But can you stick to it? I mean, you used to stay up until at least two in the morning.
W: I believe I can. You see, I have more morning courses this term, and I’m going to take the big exam, so there’s a lot of work to be done. I need to save energy for study and I’m hoping this year will be a turning point in my life.
M: Good for you, and good luck. In fact, I’ve made a New Year resolution, too.
W: I’m all ears.
M: I wanna learn to speak French.
W: Is there a particular reason?
M: French is a beautiful language, and I’ve always wanted to go to France. I’ll probably apply to a French university after graduation.
W: Great choice. I know you are very good at learning languages.
M: Thank you. It seems we’ll be very busy this year.
W: Yeah. I’m actually a bit afraid I will give up halfway.
M: You can make a weekly list to remind yourself every day that certain things must be done.
W: That’s a good idea. I think I’ll do that.
M: Yeah, let’s dream big and try our best to make it come true.
