M: Kids in the US may not get presents for Thanksgiving next Thursday, but they’ll still have fun. Why? Because they get the day off school!
Thanksgiving is celebrated on the final Thursday of November every year. It’s a time to be with your family, to eat and play. Everyone looks forward to it, especially kids.
Thanksgiving was first celebrated in 1620. That year, English people went to the US for the first time.
They found farming in the US hard. But with the help of the Native Americans, they were able to harvest a lot of food.
They invited the Native Americans to eat with them. At the meal, they thanked God for their good luck.
Thanksgiving has been celebrated ever since in the US.
On Thanksgiving, families eat a big, golden turkey, corn, and pumpkin pies. Everyone eats until they’re full. There’s so much food that people often get stomachaches.
They also give thanks for their loved ones and play games. It’s a great day!
W: Hangzhou students are lucky. While kids in other cities are busy with classes and exams, Hangzhou kids will be having fun!
That is because Hangzhou schools will have a two-week spring break this year. It begins on April 24. They will be able to enjoy the time relaxing after all the hard work of school. They will go back to school on May 10.
Students there now have four holidays each year: two weeks in spring, one week in autumn, and the summer and winter holidays.
They are the first in the country to have a spring break. But their summer holiday will now be shorter.
Teachers hope the new holidays will help the students get more rest. As all Chinese students know, school is very hard work. The teachers think that the kids will be happier at school after taking it easy for a while.
Many schools will have fun things to do during the break. Hangzhou’s No 10 Middle School will have a “Genius contest” on April 28. Students will try to blow out the most candles or throw cards the best. How lucky they are!
