Dialogue 1M: Hey, Jenny, you still play tennis?
W: Sometimes.
M: Well, we are playing tennis tonight at the court. Will you join us?
W: Oh, I can’t. I am working tonight. I just got a job at a bar.
Dialogue 2W: Which is your favorite TV channel?
M: I like to watch the sports channel.
W: Don't you watch any other channels?
M: Sometimes I also watch Discovery, Music and some news channels.
Dialogue 3M: Most of my classmates have hobbies such as reading and painting, but I prefer paper cutting.
W: Oh, that’s interesting.
Dialogue 4W: Michael, I heard your jazz band is going to play at the student center. I’m just calling to let you know I’ll be there.
M: Oh, thanks, but I am not in the band any more. In fact I’m not in the group at all right now.
W: That’s too bad. You’re such a good musician. Why did you leave the group?
M: I just couldn’t be a full-time student and still practice with the band every night. I also missed a couple of performances during my midterm exams. And I thought I'd better quit before the band leader fired me.
W: Hey, you know my friend Charlie, don’t you? He plays the piano. He and some of his friends are getting a band together. And they need a good singer.
M: I wouldn't have time for that either.
W: Oh, I don’t think they’ll practice very often. Charlie and his friends are all students, too. I’ll give you his number and you can get in touch with him.
Dialogue 5M: Will you go and see the movie tonight?
W: When will it begin?
M: At 7:30. Shall we go together?
W: I’d love to, but I’m afraid I won’t be able to. Someone will visit me at 8 o’clock.
M: You mean Bill?
W: Yes, I help him with English every Wednesday night at 8 o’clock. And this lasts for at least one hour and a half.
M: I’m sorry you can’t see the film. It’s a really good one.
W: It’s a great pity. I hope I can get another chance soon.
Can teenagers write books? Some people don’t think so. They should meet Cayla Kluver. The 17-year-old has published her first book, Legacy, which won several book awards in the US in 2008 and 2009.
Kluver began writing when she was in high school. The only time she had to write was between 10 pm and 4 am. It took Kluver more than a year to write Legacy, which she started in July 2006.
Greater difficulties came later. Publishers didn’t want to look at a book written by a 14-year-old. They thought a teenager wouldn’t be able to write a good book.
In 2008, Kluver’s mother started a company to publish Legacy online and in schools, libraries and bookstores. Their work paid off. Last year, Legacy sold well and won several awards. Now she’s working on the final book of the series. And she already has ideas for her next book.
