听力原文:

Dialogue 1

W: Alan, you’re back. How was your vacation?

M: Just don’t ask. I wish I had never had it.

W: What went wrong?

M: What didn’t go wrong? That would be a better question.

Dialogue 2

M: When will you be leaving for your planned holiday in Hawaii?

W: It’s out of the question. I’ve got a new job. I won’t be free until my training is over.

Dialogue 3

W: Christmas is coming! I’m so looking forward to going home and seeing my parents.

M: I am too. I don’t get to see my folks that often, so the festival is the most special time of the year.

W: I’m taking so many presents. It’s going to be difficult on the train.

Man: I’m sure your family will appreciate your efforts!

Dialogue 4

M: Let’s go and have lunch together.

W: Ok!

M: By the way. I’m thinking of going to New Zealand around Christmas for three weeks. It’s such a beautiful country. I’ve never been there before.

W: Have you booked the flight?

M: Not yet. I’m planning to book my flight in two weeks’ time.

W: Book your flight right now.

M: Why?

W: Because the longer you leave it, the more expensive it will be. As a matter of fact, the prices may double at Christmas time. New Zealanders usually go home for Christmas.

M: Then I’m going to book my flight tomorrow morning.

Dialogue 5

M: It seems that the whole world has gone Christmas mad!

W: Why do you say that?

M: Everywhere I look I see Christmas decorations and everywhere I go I hear Christmas carols!

W: Well, decorations and carols are two important aspects of the Christmas festival.

M: What about Christmas cards? Have you sent yours yet?

W: You know that I am always well organized. I bought cards in July, arranged my address book in September, wrote the cards in November and posted them two weeks ago.

M: What about your Christmas shopping? I bet you have not finished that yet!

W: I did all of that in July during the sales, so I could save a fortune.

M: I have so much to learn!

Monologue

It is December thirty-first in New York City. Hundreds of thousands of people are gathered in Times Square. They stand close together, waiting in the cold darkness for midnight. That is the time when the old year dies and the New Year is born.

The people count the seconds until the New Year arrives. “Ten…nine…eight…” A huge glass New Year’s Ball falls through the darkness. When the ball reaches the ground, the New Year has begun. People shout “Happy New Year!” They throw tiny pieces of colorful paper into the air.

Other Americans observe the holiday at restaurants and bars. Some people like to see the New Year in while traveling by boat. Some Americans have parties at home and invite all their friends. Many of these events are noisy. People shout and sing. They often blow on whistles when the New Year arrives at midnight. They kiss their husband or wife or the person they are with.
