A decoding of US copyright law

According to an article on the Stanford University Libraries’ website, any American work published before Jan 1, 1923 is in the public domain. However, if a work was published in 1923 or later, then it won’t fall into the public domain until 2019 or later. So, for example, the copyrights for works published in 1924 will expire in 2020, and so on.
