And while the protagonist of his prize-winning novel The Sellout also *hails from the same area, the author’s *upbringing tells a different tale. When Beatty was just 3, his father left the family. His mother, Yvonne, a nurse and painter, took on the task of raising him and his two sisters single-handedly.
