American author Edgar Allan Poe (1809 – 1849) wrote short stories and poems that were often quite dark and sad. But he was also very clever and creative. Many experts say he invented detective fiction, while he also wrote some of the earliest science-fiction (科幻) stories. You may also have heard of his famous poem, The Raven (《乌鸦》).
