Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859－1930) was born in Scotland. He worked as a doctor on several ships. In 1887 he published (出版) A Study in Scarlet, the first of four novels about Holmes and Watson. He was soon famous for his crime fiction writing. But he also wrote fantasy (奇幻小说), science fiction, plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction and historical novels.
