Jane Eyre (《简·爱》,1847) is a novel by English writer Charlotte Bronte. The book is known as an influential feminist (女性主义的) story because of its in-depth exploration of a strong female character’s feelings. The story is about Jane Eyre’s rough road to growth and her love for Mr Rochester, her employer at the fictitious (虚构的) Thornfield Hall. The focus is on the gradual unfolding of Jane’s morality (道德) and spiritual side. The extract below is about Jane’s childhood, during which she’s emotionally and physically abused (虐待) by her aunt and cousins.
