Why do we say ‘mai dongxi’?

买“东西”为啥不叫买“南北”？

In Chinese, we say “mai dongxi (买东西)” to mean “buy things”. But why is it “dongxi” and not “nanbei (南北)”? “Dong” and “xi” are directions. How can we “buy” them?
