Realism was a school of art founded after the 1848 revolution in France. This was a time of democratic (民主的) struggle by powerless people in society. There is no doubt that there is a connection between the democratic politics (政治) of 1848 and the new kinds of pictures made by the Realist artists. Their paintings and drawings were of ordinary people – at home, at work and at play, in the city and in the countryside. This made Realist art very different from the art the recent past in France.
