Superstar pianist Lang Lang, 38, has realized his lifelong dream. On Sept 4, he released a new recording of German composer Johann Sebastian Bach’s Goldberg Variations (《哥德堡变奏曲》), featuring both a studio and live version of the same piece. The Goldberg Variations, often described as “a musical Everest”, was published in 1741 and consists of 30 variations and an aria (咏叹调). To achieve his goal, Lang Lang fully immersed himself in the work for over 20 years and subsequently sought advice from leading interpreters of the work. “Lang Lang indeed shows himself as a mature and individual performer, fully engaged with Bach’s genius,” The Times commented.
