Spotify, a Swedish music platform, has announced some changes to its royalty payments starting in early 2024. The new policy requires tracks to get at least 1,000 listens every year. Otherwise, they won’t get royalties. What’s more, some styles of “noise” tracks, such as white noise and sleep sounds, have to be at least two minutes long to get royalties. This has caused anger from some independent musicians. “When you put a number on it, you’re putting a number on art,” musician Brandon Washington told The Guardian.
