EU feels pain of teacher shortages

The European Commission has published its Education and Training Monitor 2023, offering an overview of the state of development in education and training in the European Union. The monitor tracks the progress towards the targets set by EU countries as part of the European Education Area’s strategic framework. It brings together the latest  available data and updates on national policy measures. The report highlights teacher shortages in the bloc, attributed to an aging workforce and higher turnover rates. In higher education, heavy workloads, long working hours and low pay are among the main reasons given for large  turnover among educators.
