In Japan, couples are free to choose which surname (姓) to take when they marry. However, as reported by The Guardian, in 95 percent of cases, women are the ones who end up changing their names, even if they don’t want to. This brings many problems for these women. For example, they have to go through many steps to change the name on their passports. They also have to change their social media accounts (社交媒体账号). Some say that having to use the same surname is another sign that the country doesn’t show great respect (尊重) to women. So, many women in the country have been calling for the law to change.
