With more and more people enjoying drinking coffee, the amount of spent coffee grounds (SCG, 咖啡渣) is increasing, which is harmful to the environment because of the gas they let out in landfills (垃圾填埋场). A research team from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in Australia has discovered that by adding biochar (生物炭) made out of SCG, they can make concrete (混凝土) that is 30 percent harder than normal concrete. The researchers developed a technique that changes spent coffee grounds into biochar by using a low-energy process without oxygen at 350 C. Researchers say they still need to assess the long-term durability of the SCG concrete.
