On May 24, Chinese director Guan Hu’s film Black Dog (《狗阵》) received the top prize in the Un Certain Regard section at the 77th Cannes Film Festival. The last time this award, which is second only to the prestigious Palme d’Or Award, went to a Chinese film was back in 2006 with Wang Chao’s Luxury Car (《江城夏日》). Black Dog tells how a loner released from jail (监狱), played by Eddie Peng (彭于晏), forms an unlikely connection with a black dog called Xiaoxin. The dog also won second prize at the Palm Dog Awards, which honor the best canine (犬的) performances on the big screen.
