At the 2024 CIUTI (International Permanent Conference of University Institutes of Translators and Interpreters) International Conference held recently in Shanghai, experts emphasized that AI will enhance but not replace human interpreters. Ian Phillips, director of the news and media division of the Department of Global Communications at the United Nations, highlighted AI’s role in improving efficiency but acknowledged its limitations in understanding body language and subtle nuances. Li Zhengren, executive dean of the Graduate Institute of Interpretation and Translation at Shanghai International Studies University, added that human expertise remains essential for high-quality translation and interpretation. “Excellent translation talent will continue to play an important role as globalization increases and the country further deepens reform and opening-up,” said Li.
