South Korea elects Lee Jae-myung as its new president

Lee Jae-myung from the liberal Democratic Party (共同民主党) was elected as South Korea’s 21st president on June 4. He received 49.42 percent of the vote (选票), beating his main opponent, Kim Moon-soo from the conservative People Power Party (国民力量党), by 8.27 percentage points, according to South Korea’s National Election Commission. With the commission’s approval, Lee officially began his five-year term earlier that day. In a televised speech, he promised to overcome the problems caused by the 20th president, Yoon Suk-yeol. He also said he would work to improve people’s lives and protect their safety.
