MORE than 40,000 students from non-English-speaking backgrounds do not get language help at school in Australia. Since 1983, the number of students denied ESL help has tripled to 41,158. Since 1993, not one extra ESL teacher has been employed despite a steady increase in the number of students needing help. New South Wales’ Teachers Federation has warned that neglecting students’ needs puts them at risk of dropping out.
The U.K. has a new Children’s Laureate

JACQUELINE Wilson was named the 2005-2007 Children’s Laureate in England, on May 26. Wilson has won many awards, including The Guardian Children’s Fiction Award and the Children’s Book of the Year at the British Book Awards.
