US author Paul Auster was awarded Spain's top literature prize, the Prince of the Asturias Prize. Auster, the author of the novels "New York Trilogy" and "Timbuktu", has written acclaimed novels, poems and film scripts. The jury praised Auster for his ability to "unite the best in American and European traditions". The prize recognizes an individual, a group or an institution whose work makes an important contribution to universal culture in the fields of literature or linguistics.
US navy launches voice translator

THE US Office of Naval Research has showed off some high-tech gadgets including a computer that speaks a dozen languages. A programme called "Interact" in the computer is a voice translator. If people speak into a microphone, the software will understand what they've said and translate it into text, speaking in a synthesized voice. The computer has a dozen languages including English, Korean, Spanish, French and German. SpeechGear Inc., the company behind the technology, said they're working on Chinese.
