US novelist Philip Roth has won the PEN/Faulkner literary award for “Everyman”, his short, dreary novel about illness and mortality. Roth is the first three-time winner in the history of the PEN/Faulkner Award, founded in 1980 to honor the best published works of fiction by American citizens in a calendar year. Roth will receive US$15,000. “Everyman” tells the story of the physical decline and death of its unnamed protagonist.
