J. SIGFRID EDSTRM was president of the International Olympic Committee from 1946 to 1952. He was born on November 21, 1870,in Sweden (瑞典). When he was a student, he practiced athletics(田径) and was a very good runner.
Edstrm was one of the organizers of the Olympic Games in Stockholm(斯德哥尔摩) in 1912, and took part in the 1908, 1920, 1924, 1928, 1932 and 1936 Games as head of the Swedish delegation(代表团). At the 1912 Olympic Games, he took the lead in founding the International Amateur Athletics Federation(国际业余田径联合会), and was elected(当选) its first president.
He became a member of the IOC in 1920. One year later he was elected to the Executive Board (执行委员会)of the IOC, and became vice-president in 1931. During World War II, he kept in contact with members of the IOC. He played an important role in reviving(复兴) the Olympic Movement after World War II.
In 1946, Edstrm became president of the IOC in Lausanne(洛桑). He retired in 1952 at the age of 82 with the title of Life Honorary President(名誉主席) of the IOC. He died on March 18, 1964.
