THE TOEFL test has been approved for use with the UK’s new immigration Points-Based System after the TOEIC test received a similar acceptance in March. The new system’s main elements consolidate more than 80 work and study application routes into five tiers, and awards points to reflect aptitude, experience, age and level of need in any given sector. The TOEFL test will be used to certify highly skilled immigrants.

CANADA will spend C$150 million (US$150 million) this year on enhanced language training programs for skilled immigrant workers who have a basic understanding of English, but need to learn the vocabulary specific to their field. The money is part of the C$1.4 billion (US$1.4 billion) over five years the Conservatives committed to settlement funding in 2006.
