RAISED in a liberal, middle-class English family the only career guidance my parents ever gave me was: “Don’t join the army!” I chose to study sound engineering at university. It did not lead to a glittering career in the music industry but an unstable, nomadic existence instead. Most Chinese parents are rather more involved with their children’s future path.
