THE South Korean National Institute for International Education (NIIE) is recruiting 608 native English speakers as assistant teachers in public schools from next March. The NIIE, affiliated with the Ministry of Education, has been hiring, training and allocating native speakers under its “English Program in Korea (EPIK).” The EPIK plans to encourage schools to provide more guidance for native English teachers.

ABOUT 31 percent of Malaysian pupils who sat for the Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (Primary School Assessment) this year answered the questions set for the Science paper entirely in English. For the Mathematics paper, it was 46 percent. The results also showed a 4.4 percent increase in the number of pupils who scored A in English. The Malaysian Ministry of Education will carry out an in-depth analysis of the results.
