RECENT figures obtained by the British Liberal Democrats show that in 2007, more than 11,000 trainee teachers, just over a quarter of the annual enrollment, initially failed to pass a literacy test. The test, which is taken online by students training to teach primary and secondary schools, is designed to raise standards in the teaching profession. The failure rate for this test has increased 16 percent since 2001.
Ex-Nova students sue for refunds

FORMER students of Japan’s Nova English conversation schools recently filed a group lawsuit concerning the bankrupt company’s failure to return 56 billion yen ($559 million) in tuition and other advance payments. Up to now, about 300,000 people have not received refunds for their advance payments since the Osaka-based language school chain filed for bankruptcy protection in October of last year.
