HALF of British adults have forgotten foreign language skills they learned at school, a poll commissioned by language software specialists Rosetta Stone has found. And 40 percent of people regretted not keeping up their languages after leaving school. Some 52 percent said languages were important to a career, with 65 percent saying they intended to improve their foreign language skills.

ACCORDING to an Irish government-funded report, uneven standards and a lack of regulation are undermining the capacity of state bodies to provide a coherent interpreting and translation services to immigrants. The study shows that a majority of service providers in critical areas such as justice, health, education and housing did not provide professional interpreting on a systematic basis.
