THE number of British students opting to study modern languages at GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) continues to slide, with French being the biggest loser. Figures showed that take-up of French had fallen by 6.8 percent this year. German fell by 5.4 percent. The slump was only partly offset by a rise of 4.9 percent in Spanish. Andrew Adonis, the Schools minister, said there was “more to be done” to encourage language learning.
