A BREAKDOWN of literacy and numeracy assessments of more than one million students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 across Australia showed that girls are leading the pack in reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation. In Year 3, 93.5 percent of girls were at or above the national minimum standard for reading — compared to 89.6 percent of boys. The results were similar in Year 5, 7 and 9.
Philippine govt to pass ‘English’ bill

THE Philippine House of Representatives will soon pass a bill that seeks to restore English as the principal medium of instruction in public schools. Of the 238 members of the House, at least 202 signed the Act Strengthening and Enhancing the Use of English as the Medium of Instruction. The principal author of the measure said it could build up “global competitiveness of the country’s labor force”.
