THE Japanese cartoon character Mario has finally met his match. As of December 27, Nintendo's classic NES video game hit featuring the Italian plumber is no longer the all-time bestselling video game. Ironically, Super Mario Bros was surpassed by another Nintendo title, Wii Sports, which has sold over 40 million units, according to VGChartz.com. Mario ushered in an era of side-scrolling video games. Wii Sports, meanwhile, represents an era of gaming that engages gamers' whole bodies – not just their thumbs. The Wii console is thought by many experts to be the video game system of the future. Mario must now bow to Wii Sports, but don't worry about him: He's still by far the most dominant video game character ever. Even more impressive, every game in the Top 10 bestsellers was made by the Japanese video game developer Nintendo. The bestsellers include the old NES games Duck Hunt (5) and Tetris (4), as well as a Nintendo DS Pokemon title (3).
