THE Japan Association for Language Teaching (JALT) is linking up with Lexxica, an innovative e-learning company based in Tokyo, to produce a JALT Word Engine — an on-line assessment and learning program designed to help students rapidly increase their subject-specific high-frequency vocabulary for the EIKEN Test in Practical English Proficiency, TOEIC and TOEFL. Each JALT Word Engine course is based on extensive corpus analysis conducted to identify all of the high-frequency words that are required for full comprehension of the subject.

WITH over 1,000 part-time and temporary teaching posts in Irish state schools to be axed, recent teaching graduates are signing up for EFL teacher training courses in record numbers. Desperate graduates with a higher diploma or secondary school qualification have been contacting the Advisory Council for English Language Schools (ACELS), which accredits language schools, to ask about teacher training courses. “We advise Irish teachers looking to work overseas to take the Certificate in English Language Teaching (CELT) as the Preparatory TEFL Qualification is not an international qualification,” an ACELS spokesperson said.

AT a symposium recently conducted by the British Council in Indonesia and the Indonesian Education Ministry, English experts found that teachers in Indonesia may not be ready to take up the challenge of teaching subjects in English, as stipulated by a current government policy that requires every province to have at least one international-standard school. “Some teachers still struggle to teach the English language in English, let alone teach other subjects using the language,” Itje Chodidjah, the British Council’s educational advisor said.
