THE passing of two of China's most distinguished scholars, Ji Xianlin and Ren Jiyu, on July 11, no doubt brought a sense of crisis and urgency to academia. People have lamented the decline in Chinese education and scholarship and many have asked why we don't see similar master achievers in today's China.
