New York Times editor tells staff writers to use difficult words only when they must

DON’T feel guilty if you need a little help to figure out the meaning of some of the words mentioned in this story. So did many readers of The New York Times. The paper’s deputy news editor Phillip Corbett recently sent an e-mail to Times staff members asking them to be a little more careful when using difficult words, such as solipsistic, laconic and louche (see English definitions on the right).
