CHINESE American Yupeng Deng, 51, was recently arrested and charged for “theft (盗窃) by false pretenses (乔装罪), manufacturing (制造) of official government documents and counterfeit (伪造品) of an official government seal”. How did he manage to fit these crimes together? Deng started his own fake army unit in California and convinced recent Chinese immigrants that joining his ranks, at $300 (1,955 yuan) a head, would increase chances of citizenship. Deng gave himself the title of “Supreme (最高的) Commander” and had as many as 100 Chinese nationals in his army. “Supreme Commander” Deng’s “army” even held a parade and visited a retired aircraft carrier.
