Is it “Jingju”, or is it Peking Opera? In English, the latter term is certainly much more widely used and better known than the former. But two of the art’s leading institutions in the country, the China National Peking Opera Theater Company and the Peking Opera Theater Company of Beijing, now call for changing the English name of the ancient art, and hence their company names as well. They want to go with the Chinese pinyin, “Jingju”, instead of the transliteration “Peking Opera”.
