In the US, when tragedies occur, people come together to pay their respects to the dead in various forms. At organized formal *mourning ceremonies the names of victims are read out one by one to show that every life matters. There are also more spontaneous gestures. People place flowers, candles, hand-written notes full of love, toys, and balloons, among other items, at the scene of the tragedies or memorials to show their grief. Vigils are also organized to mourn the dead.
