The concept of “positive thinking” — the belief that if you imagine things going well, they’re far more likely to do so — has become a popular recipe for success and happiness. But according to Gabriele Oettingen, a German professor of psychology at New York University, spending time and energy thinking about how well things could go actually reduces most people’s motivation to achieve them.
