GOOD morning, ladies and gentlemen. What is respect? Respect is an unassuming resounding (低调而巨大的) force, the stuff that equity (公平) and justice (正义) are made of, and it means a lot of different things to different people. It means being treated with esteem (尊敬) and consideration and being willing to treat people similarly. It means having a regard for other people’s feelings, listening to people and hearing them. Even more importantly, respect means treating others with dignity (尊严). As William Ury writes in his book The Third Side: “Human beings have a host of emotional needs for love and recognition (认可), for belonging and identity, for purpose and meaning to lives. If all these needs had to be subsumed in one word, it might be respect.” Respect is the first positive step in building a relationship.
