THERE is a term for jealousy in English: “the green-eyed monster”. It conveys the lack of control that a jealous person has over his or her unhappy and sometimes dangerous emotions. No artist has better presented jealousy than William Shakespeare in his play Othello. This tragedy also touches upon race. Othello is a Moor (摩尔人), a black man, and his skin color is a reason many characters in the drama mistrust him. And in the case of Iago, the greatest enemy in Shakespeare’s plays, he hates him.
