In developed countries, such as the US, co-ed housing is a common sight on university campuses. In the 1970s, many US colleges began to offer co-ed dormitory buildings in which male and female students lived on different floors. In recent years, there has been a movement toward *gender-neutral housing policies at many of the nation’s top schools. In December 2010, George Washington University set an international *precedent and announced a controversial policy allowing all students to share dormitory rooms with anyone they want, regardless of gender.
