China Central Television’s (CCTV) annual Spring Festival *Gala, the world’s most watched television event, has seen more fierce criticism because of *perceived *discrimination against women and other disadvantaged groups this year. Minutes after some of its *segments aired on the eve of the *Lunar New Year, some *feminists posted articles on social media accusing them of making fun of unmarried women, overweight women and successful career women, among others. Some of the shows featured commentary on women’s looks and marital and job status that *offended many female viewers, the critics claim. The criticism gathered steam in the weeks after the show aired. More feminist critics have published comments pointing out the faults of the CCTV programs, and some have called for the show’s producers and CCTV leadership to apologize. Others proposed boycotts against the Spring Festival Gala in the future.
