Millions of public sector workers took qualification certificate exams in late March that determine their professional rankings. As usual, the English *proficiency *portion of the exams became a key target of complaints as many public sector workers don’t really use English in their daily work. But they had to do extra studying as the results were important to their ranking and salaries. Commentator Qiao Yutian writes on rednet.cn that while hundreds of millions of Chinese students and employees are required to learn English, there is still a serious lack of talent with advanced English language skills.
