As more and more Chinese celebrities participate in charity events, some of them are unwittingly creating more controversy than positive publicity. Pop singer Xue Kaiqi raised eyebrows when early this month she published photos of herself setting some turtles free into the wild. She meant it as an animal protection event, but sharp-eyed Internet users soon pointed out that those turtles were known as “red-eared sliders”, a well-known invasive species which could wreak ecological *havoc in a non-natural habitat.
