Living the dream?

本文作者: 21st
The resignation letter of Gu Shaoqiang, a teacher from Henan, *went viral on social media and got the whole nation talking last week. The poetically brief letter states: “The world is so big; I want to see it.” Many commentators have since applauded the simple yet overwhelmingly *resonant message, saying that it spoke the minds of millions of people who feel they have been trapped in a dull and routine life and want to do something dramatic to change it. Supporters say that everybody at some point has dreamed of an extraordinary and different life, but the majority of people in society have to put up with their less-than-*glamorous surroundings and situations. Whatever the teacher may be able to achieve with her life, the courage to make changes and pursue one’s dreams is to be praised, they say. *Detractors, however, point to the seemingly impractical purpose set out in the resignation letter, and insist that life is not as simple as that. Sometimes it can be an irresponsible decision to pursue one’s own desires by giving up one’s ordinary life along with its duties and commitments, not to mention that the courage to follow one’s dreams alone may not guarantee any meaningful result, critics have pointed out.
