综合测试(二)

本文作者: 辽宁省实验中学北校 董冰 首都师大附中 马丽娟

In the UK we have many different names for mealtimes, including breakfast, brunch, elevenses, lunch, tea, dinner and supper.

Elevenses and tea are two British traditions. Elevenses is eaten at 11:00 am, consisting of cakes or biscuits with a cup of tea or coffee. Tea includes snacking on cakes with a cup of tea, and is normally taken between 4:30 and 5:30 pm.

However, because people tend to have busy lifestyles in Britain, they only eat three main meals each day – breakfast, lunch and dinner.

A traditional English breakfast includes sausages, bacon, fried eggs, mushrooms, baked beans, fried tomatoes and toast with butter. However, these days most people don’t eat a traditional breakfast every day. This is because it is very unhealthy, and many people don’t have time to cook. Most people eat a bowl of cereal (谷类食物) with milk, or have a couple of slices of toast with butter.

Lunch is usually a quick meal because schoolchildren and people at work are busy. In fact, many parents give their children a packed lunch in a plastic lunchbox. This usually consists of a sandwich, a piece of fruit and a drink.

However, on Sunday people usually have a larger lunch called a “Sunday roast”. This is a time that people like to spend with their family. The lunch consists of roast meat, served with roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, vegetables and gravy.

Dinner is the main meal of the day, and a time for people to relax and enjoy a cooked meal with friends or family after a hard day at work. “Going out for dinner” is a very popular kind of date, and some people see eating good food as very romantic.

Video glasses – they make people look cool in movies. Now, thanks to scientists, the reality could be even cooler. Professor Babak Parviz of the University of Washington in the US and his team have created an electronic contact lens (隐形眼镜), which could allow you to watch TV and see electronic documents and e-mails directly on your eye, according to the website Popscience.

The new lens can be put onto your eye and removed just like a normal contact lens. It contains several parts, including an LED light, an electronic circuit (电路) and an antenna that picks up power and information.

In order not to block people’s normal field of vision (视野), the researchers have kept all the parts extremely small. Some parts are thousands of times thinner than a human hair.

Apart from its size, another challenge facing researchers is that the human eye can only focus on things a few centimeters away or farther. Anything too close to our eyes will appear blurry. To solve this problem, Parviz used a thin, special lens called a “Fresnel lens” to magnify the display.

So far, the lens has only one pixel (像素) and cannot show anything other than a dot. To display a short e-mail or text message would need hundreds of pixels at least. But the new invention has proven that it is possible to develop more complex information lenses.

Researchers tested the lens in a rabbit’s eye and it did not appear to cause any health problems.

According to Parviz, one day, people will be able to see all the information they need directly from their contact lenses. We may even be able to zoom in on faraway views when enjoying scenery outdoors.

Parviz is now also trying to develop medical uses for the lens. He is working on putting a blood sugar sensor into it to pick up the wearer’s blood sugar level and other important medical information.
