THERE’S a fascinating story by American writer Edgar Allan Poe called The Man in the Crowd. It’s not a detective tale, but it has all the atmosphere of one. It’s about a man in London chasing another man in a crowd. It’s worth reading, together with The Murders in the Rue Morgue, because it tells you about the atmosphere of the big city, which is so important in the early detective stories.
