MANY Chinese students are unfamiliar with the idea of a liberal-arts education (通识教育) – an apporach to learning that’s common at US universities. It’s a term and philosophy (哲学) I learned when I attended Vassar College in New York, which is considered one of the best liberal-arts schools in the country.
