He did three things that would be 6 today but were unheard of then.

Can it be proved that 14 added 26 years to Norman Cousins’ life? 15 , but we see above that it 16 the immune system that fights disease. There can be 17 real tests for this. They can’t take two groups of dying people and have one laugh and 18 cry and see who lives. The ethical problems would be enormous and there would be too many variables. We will just have to 19 his word. If laughing doesn’t extend life, wouldn’t it be 20 to laugh anyway to make your last days more pleasant?

The hostess apologized to her unexpected guest for serving an apple pie without any cheese. The little boy of the family left the room quietly for a moment and returned with a piece of cheese which he laid on the guest’s plate.

The visitor smiled, put the cheese into his mouth and then said: “You must have better eyes than your mother, sonny (小家伙). Where did you find the cheese?”

“In the rat-trap (捕鼠器), sir,” replied the boy.

2. A。由上文“Norman Cousins was given a few months to live ”可知这里指他只有五百分之一的生存几率。

3. C。 in detail 详细地;in time 及时;in danger 处于危险中;in order 井然有序地。

9. A。此处对应下文的“He spent a lot of time watching films and laughing ... he made a point of laughing until his stomach hurt from it”根据常识,能让他笑的肚子痛的一定是滑稽电影。

10. D。make a point of doing sth表示“重视做某事,努力做某事”。 in spite of 尽管;apart from 除……之外;as a result of 由于;in terms of 就…… 方面。

B

11-15 BADCB 16-20 DACBD

1. B。由下一句“This was one of several nights Noah had been 2 , burning with a high fever.”

2. C。Be up有“起床”的意思。

4. A。feel

6. A。这里与上文“burning with a high fever”对应。

7. B。结合前文Noah高烧可知他身体状况处于困境之中,故选C,in trouble 陷入困境;in peace 平静地;in anxiety 焦虑不安地;in shock 处在震惊之中。

8. D。Noah

C

11-15 DCBAD 16-20 BADCB

14. A。 故选A。

turn down 降低;take down 取下,写下,拆掉;put down 放下。
