Becoming a “comeback master” takes a lot of practice. To become more linguistically *agile, you should read all kinds of books, not only humorous ones. Watching comedies helps too, especially if you pay attention to the actors’ sense of timing. Also, take notes – if you hear someone say a line that gets a good laugh, write it down.
